Josh Beckett to retire

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Josh Beckett has had a very up and down 2014 season. The highlight of his season came in May when Beckett threw a no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies. The lowlight? Well that came when he missed the final three months of the season, including the playoffs, due to a torn labrum in his hip. The rehab time for such an injury is short which should allow Beckett to be ready for Spring Training. Instead the 34-year old veteran has decided to hang his cleats up.

Beckett’s season ended with torn labrum in his left hip. He said he will undergo surgery in May. Although many pitchers return from the arthroscopic operation and the resulting three-month rehab, Beckett said that’s not in his plans.

“I just don’t see me going through that rehab and coming back to pitch at this point in my life,” he said. (MLB)

I’m sure a lot of his decision is based on frustration. Beckett was pitching very well at the time of his injury and looked like a legitimate contender for Comeback Player of the Year. His record was only 6-6 after 20 starts but he did have a 2.88 ERA over 115 innings, including 107 strikeouts.

To have such a season after missing most of the 2013 season had to be very discouraging. So yea, I really can’t blame him for his decision.

At least he ends his career on a high note. Not many players get to retire while still playing at a high level. Even fewer have accomplished what he has in his career and still at a “young” age.
